Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubé announced on Sunday, September 27, 2020, that the Montreal region will fall into the red zone within a few days. Indeed, with nearly 900 new Covid-19 infections in 24 hours, the situation is very disturbing. On Monday, September 28, 2020, at 5:30 p.m., the Government of Quebec made the official announcement.

Moving into the red zone means that new health rules must be observed for citizens and businesses.

This page will be updated in real-time based on government announcements and activities and will inform you of the situation regarding marriages in the Montreal region.

Red zone and marriage celebrations in Montreal

Our notaries’ office is proud to celebrate civil marriages during Covid-19 while respecting government health guidelines. Our processes and procedures have been changed to let everyone have a safe civil marriage. We voluntarily limit access to our rooms to 10 people, including the couple, the notary and the notary’s assistant. In this sense, we are doing the same as the Montreal Courthouse, which allows the same number of participants, as we have checked.

The Quebec government may also introduce stricter health rules such as the obligation to wash or disinfect hands when entering a place that is open to the public. These measures would be in addition to the obligation to wear a mask in public places and businesses in effect since July 18, 2020.
